Children in Need Peer Mediation Project

Wales Restorative Approaches Partnership and Cardiff Social Services

Julia, Lorna, Vince, Tammi and Jess are working with Cardiff Social Services and one Cardiff care home in particular, as the project team.

Children/ young people who are about to leave or have left care, will join the project team to bespoke work already created with and for school children on peer mediation.

We aim to ensure our project meets specific need early for those still in residential care and in foster care, so this project could be scaled up in future.

Children/ young people living at one Cardiff care home, will help us throughout the life of the project in co-design and co-delivery.

Children and young people will act as restorative peer mediators and mentors in their care home, in school and in families.

They will be restorative leaders, sharing tools, techniques and best practice. The young people will gain and share transferrable skills throughout this process which can also support them and others in school and group activity. We will encourage children to use these skills to ensure their voice is heard in meetings with agencies and with family contact, about decisions affecting them, their life and their future. The conflict resolution and self-calming skills learned in this process and the training will be skills for all relationships, including parenting in future.
